posting this for my own reference:

6 Perfect Skulls + 1 Rare Item = 1 Random Low Quality Rare Item of the same type
You can use this formula to get another chance at a Rare Item of the same type. ilvl = int(.4 * clvl) + int(.4 * ilvl) Player level matters.

now can anyone tell me how to figure out the item level? and what does the 'int' stand for? and if i use this formula for jewels, am i going to get a product with shittier stats than the jewel i used? is that what it means by lower quality?

Ok, here's the way the formula works.

Lower quality simply refers to the ilvl dropping. In previous patches it was possible to cube +2 skill ammy's with this recipe. Now ilvl 90 (+2 skill ammy's) are no longer possible. Simply put, everytime something is rolled with the 6 Skull recipe, the ilvl of the item changes.

The INT function is just something so calculations wont get carried to decimal places. Simply, it makes the value an integer. int(5.3) = 5, int(7.9) = 7. Just round it down.

When an item is found, an ilvl is attached equal to the mlvl of the monster that dropped it. mlvls can be found on either Darkness (Darkness.diabloii.net) or at D2Data (D2data.net). If there's any doubt as to the ilvl of the item you have, certain 3rd party programs can view ilvls. Remember, Champions (Fanatics, Ghostly) drop as mlvl + 2, and Unique monsters drop as mlvl + 3. Superuniques have thier own assigned mlvl.

I'll work through a sample calc to show you how it works.

Lets say we find a jewel in a Normal cow run. Hell Bovines are mlvl 28, so the ilvl of the jewel is 28. We'll cube this with a lvl 20 character.

The forumla is:

New_ilvl = INT(.4 * clvl) + INT(.4 *old_ilvl)

Substituting we get:

New_ilvl = INT(.4 * 20) + INT(.4 * 2Cool

Continuing:

New_ilvl = INT(Cool + INT(11.2)
New_ilvl = 8 + 11
New_ilvl = 19

So the jewel we have just cubed now has an ilvl of 19. The ilvl has dropped, which is what they mean by lower quality. This particular jewel can attain all the mods that a rare could have, as long as the ilvl required of those mods is 19 or less.

To find out what lvl character can use this jewel, multiply the highest level modifer by .75. So if this jewel rolls with an ilvl 19 modifier (it may not), it will require a character level of 14.25, rounded down to 14.

Rolling this jewel again will drop the ilvl further. I wont run through the calculations, but you can do it for yourself.

After many many rerolls, the ilvl of the jewel will stabilize at 66% of the character who is rolling it's level. Note that its possible to RAISE the ilvl of a jewel while rerolling.

If you're trying to cube jewels for lvl 9 (Oh those elusive max/ar/-reqs!) hunt Normal Andariel for jewels. She will drop ilvl 12 jewels, which will not exceed lvl 9. Cube them with a lvl 20 Character. This will maintain an Ilvl of 12, insuring that your jewels will always be available to recieve anything available at lvl 9

bela suggested in my thread to use ilvl 13 jewels with a lvl 20 char. will crafted ilvl 13 jewels always be usable by a lvl 9?
back when i crafted lvl 85 and 86 jewels using a lvl 1 char, i got them down to ilvl 12 and 13. if ilvl 13 jewels work for lvl 9, i'll have more craft-able jewels and thus, won't have to do as many normal andy runs.

I've got to take fault for the ilvl 13 jewel thing. I actually gave Bel that information. I forgot to take into account the INT() function while doing that.

For jewels, there are no ilvl 13 or 14 Mods. It will make no difference, and they will always be usable by lvl 9. The problem comes with ilvl 15 and Jewels of Ennui and Jewels of Passion. These will up your required lvl to 12, which for lvl 9 dueling is a big no-no.

If you want to cut out even more mods, and shoot for an 8 Min/Ar/-15, look for an Ilvl 8 Jewel, or work through the formula to find the clvl at which you should cube Andy Jewels.

Again, ilvl 12, 13, 14 jewels will all work for level 9 dueling. However, I personally prefer to just run Andariel, rather than go nuts looking for rare jewels in the Sewers.

Really useful information. I do not post much but I always like it when I learn something new about D2. Keep up the good work.

Make your own. All the information you need is right here:
