Would you? Technically it's an abbreviation for facsimile, but some believe it has been thoroughly decontextualized. It also isn't really slang, nor it is really improper.

would kleenex or jello be allowed? they've also been decontextualized seeing as they're actually brand names, but they're used to describe tissues and gelatin

If trademarks are used as verbs or generic names for products frequently, they can be removed from the trademark register thing and the companies lose their rights to them. Examples include hoover, escalator, sellotape, xerox and FedEx.

As for fax, i dont see it being anymore illegal than lab, fridge, plane. Which are all shortened from longer words and are commonly used.

My guess is that fax has become a word in the dictionary by now.

Yes I would, and in case this is in relation to having a disagreement as to whether you could use fax in a game you were playing, I have an Official Scrabble Player's Dictionary, and fax is in it.
Kleenex is not, nor is jello. Hoover is, xerox is, fedex is, escalator is, sellotape isn't.
