Quarters - Now with Pennies and a Key |
|
so yeah, i came across a website that caught my interest (and also has some funny stuff under the other sections at the top). the reason why it caught my interest is because i'm majoring in civil engineering and have always loved to build things with my hands as well as design structures. when i first saw that page, my roommate said what was posted there was impossible but without hesitating, i said, "i'm doing it." so, i went into my closet, took down all my laundry money, and went to work (thankfully it was a rainy day and nothing much else was going on). anyway, here's what i've created so far (remember, no glue or adhesives were used at any time).
First Attempt
This expanded to This - i had to use my chapstick to add more weight because i ran out of quarters.
Random
Four Quarter Spiral - should have taken a 3/4 top view picture but oh well.
This expanded to This expanded to This.
More Random
Two Quarter Spiral made Taller
Random Part III - this is a lot harder than it looks.
my roommate is going home next weekend and he said he'd bring back a huge sack of pennies so i'm going to have a field day when he does. i'll be updating this with bigger and better pictures when i do.
pennies:
Side View of This - the wall that arcs out and back in is only supported at the ends.
Double Above with a 3/4 Top View - i have a nice top view shot but for some reason imageshack won't let me upload it, it's weird.
Just Cool
Key - this key was sitting in Liquid Nitrogen for about 10 minutes earlier that day. i had a physics lab where the teacher handed each group a cup of liquid nitrogen and said, "do the lab and if you have any of it leftover, have fun." unfortunately, as you can see the key did not break when thrown at the ground. however, other things did including a rubber grip taken from a pencil.
the Bridge:
it Starts and Continues and Meets and Finishes - knocking it down was one of the most satisfying things. ever.
Stacking for counting - total came to $24.75 (i found two more pennies under my desk a couple days later). the span on this bridge is a bit more than 8 pennies long. out of the 2475 pennies in the structure, only 8 are touching the desk. thank God for wireless mice and keyboards - the bridge took a little over a week of building (20 minutes here, 30 minutes there) and you couldn't easily type with the pennies in the way.

very cool
there is a famous artist who does works with natural elements impressive like this only on a much bigger scale, balancing huge boulders, logs, icicles into making large abstract patterns/compositions
Andy Goldsworthy (his british i think) he has seveeral books
heres the one with stone: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0810938472/qid=1112480942/sr=2-2/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_2/002-9522128-6501614

theres some hardcore physics shit involved in this stuff...but lets not ruin fun with science
anyway, this reminds me of dominos and the domino stack/line things

not too hardcore - the key is to make sure that the downward force caused by the quarters on top is greater than the upward force caused by the quarters (the ones sticking out on the sides) tendency to want to rotate. that's why in the link that caused me to make my own structures, to go from a 6 penny span to a 7 penny span, the guy just added a few stacks of pennies onto each pier.

steady hands help. unfortunately i don't have them so it probably takes me a bit longer than others. as for how long they take me, it varies on how difficult it is to make them. i'd say they range from 15 to 30 minutes for the ones i've made. the ones i plan to make when my roommate brings me some pennies will probably take a lot longer, especially since i won't be doing it all at once, i don't usually have huge gaps of free time.

pretty cool david. in physical science class, a fellow student and myself are building a pasta bridge out of well... pasta... lol, it's pretty cool, we are using ziti, angel hair, lasanga, etc. It's taking forever, but it;s very fun.
