memory 80gb - 160 gb laptop hard drive... what uses that much space?
not to mention those 500+ gig desktop harddrives... are high quality pics THAT memory demanding??
wireless internet (a/b/g/n wtf!@)
satellite? (internet?) laptop??????
ill be searching for the answers on search engines, but im sure a lot of people are comp savvy so im open for suggestions
why would anyone need so much storage memory?
id like to get the most bang for my buck

What do you want to use it for?
Do you want a laptop or a desktop?
Are you going to be storing a lot of stuff on it?
Do you want to build it yourself?

did you want a desktop or a laptop? desktop is defininetly better bang for your buck but its not very portable. 1k could get you a very, very nice decked out desktop or a pretty good laptop. mainly it depends what you want to use the computer for though.

I think you just ruled out laptops. You won't be able to get one with good battery life that meets the reqs of modern games for under 1k.
Of course, if you need the portability of a laptop, then a desktop won't suffice.

There are basically 2 kinds of laptops; one that is meant to be carried around and one that is a desktop replacement. gaming and portability lie on opposite sides of the spectrum. but if you are happy with just gaming on lower resolutions and lower settings its possible to have what you want.

then you'll probably want a desktop

gateway has some nice desktops, unless you want to build it yourself. it will cost more, but you get the option of upgrading to whatever you want later on. the premade desktops are upgradeable, but only to a certain extent.

i got my 19" viewsonic for less than 200. is your 1k budget including everything or just the tower? if you buy a desktop, it usually comes with speakers/mouse/keyboard etc. usually the monitors they come with arent that great.

i use that much space. my music alone is about 40 gigs. are you going to have an external harddrive? once you get it, you might want to make a partition just for the essentials and put all your other junk on a separate drive. for comparison, movies can be like 1-4 gigs each.
mastercraft wrote: | are high quality pics THAT memory demanding?? |
if they really are "high quality" then yes. photoshopped pictures can take quite a bit of space
mastercraft wrote: | wireless internet (a/b/g/n wtf!@)

just using an ethernet cable is more reliable than wireless. most laptops have built in wireless.
Quote: | A - 5GHz (less interferences), but a shorter range, 54Mbps
G - 2.4GHz, longer signal, 54Mbps
B - 2.4GHz, decent signal, 11 Mbps. |
what games/programs do you plan on using? you'll want to look at ram and video cards as well. ~a gig of ram should be fine. video cards can range from onboard to two $800 ones running in SLI. for most games, you can probably go in the range of 100-200.

alright based on viets response, ill shift towards the laptop which is designed to replace a desktop
i just want to be able to play sc2 if(/when) i get bored of d2
how are laptop screens measured? diagonal length? height? width?
more ram= faster start up time?
id like to be able to use my laptop as a tv if possible

At least wait until sc2 is released. But even then, a laptop capable of playing it will be a lot more than your budget.
All screens are measured diagonally.
Start up time is mostly dependant on hard drive speed.
Either it will have a built-in tv tuner [unlikely] or you can get a usb tuner for fairly cheap.
Unless you really want/need the portability of a laptop, a desktop will be better.

IMO if you are thinking about getting a desktop replacement, you might as well get a desktop.

Sence you put it in that way.
Buy whatever u want and choose.. Dont ask ppl on the forum site to help.
If u want portability, Go with a lap top..

I dont see a problem with asking for help here.
For a nice desktop comparison i would go for something like this [prices from newegg]:
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 $129.99
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 $187.00
Graphics card: EVGA 8800GTS 640MB $319.99
PSU: antec truepower 550W $54.99
Hard drive: seagate 7200.10 80GB $42.99
Memory: geil 2GB ddr2-800 $99.99
dvd: any, samsung $32.99
case: up to you.
$868 excluding case and OS.
You can't get a laptop that good.
