Attn- computer builders Subject description: i got a predicament |
|
ok i bought a case and mobo... the case came with screws and also has some cardboard-esque washers. i assume the washers are for either the mobo or the drive bays. neither the mobo nor the case manuals say anything about using washers of any type., so i can only speculate what to do with them..
if they were for the mobo i would think theyd be used as an insulator from any outside static build-up transferring through the case standoffs.
if theyre for the drive bays id say its to reduce vibration or theyre insulating static transfer... i need some advice please

in my expert opinion (which isnt very expert) im pretty sure the washers go between the mobo and the case.

You don't really need to use the washers. Im pretty sure that the case has to make contact with the mobo to stop static and ground the case (the metal around the screw holes is the ground).
Just out of curiosity do you have the rest of the components/what are you planning to get?

You can use them for the DVD drive, which can make a lot of noise/motion when it spins up. Don't need it for the mobo, and if your HD is causing enough noise/movement to need those washers, you might want a new HD.
I'd be curious to know what else you buy, as well. My desktop is two years old, and no longer the 1337 gaming rig I demand for my slackerly needs. Getting a sense of what's current on the market will help when I get off my lazy backside and buy.

the compound paperboard washers (slight pink color usualy) slide onto the screws that u mount the mobo to the case with. sitting directly between the screws and the mobo.

i bought the majority of things from compusa at about thirty percent off on average... ill give rough estimates since my reciepts are at home
vid card was worth 450ish retail n i bought it at like 280
sound card seemed overpriced even though it was on sale 120ish
sixty dollar n wireless recieving usb thing
hp 20x dvd write allwriter pata fiftyish
2 2 gb ocz ram sticks 160ish for both
209 for the archos wifi mp3 vid internet handheld etc device
210 for my case i know i got ripped but i would pay tons for shipping a case to ak
220 mobo i just bought a mobo good enough to last me until the ddr3 ram and mobos built for it become more affordable
150ish for my psu

Sure, for only three times the price you'd pay to build it yourself. But don't worry - that 200% mark-up will net you a totally sweet Alienware case that's like all green and weird and shit.
Seriously though - for 75% of computer gamers (even serious ones), buying a computer "off the rack" is usually good enough for what you want. It's only the nerds, the powergamers, or the impatient rich who want to build their own.
