I know there are 2 seperate hits on cs, one that requires AR and one that doesn't. Can crushing blow or any other dmg mod proc on the non-AR hit?

Well the charged bolts are independant of AR, and so forth. Your actual javelin pokes can hit for phys damage, which requires an AR check, and can proc CB/DS/OW.

Are the bolts the only damage other than the physical damage? I was under the impression that there was a light dmg hit as well, and the bolts were just for a little splash damage.

No, all significant damage in a CS attack comes from the bolts. Its why angles matter so much for a CS zon.

the bolts are the dmg.

they are more effective on large monsters who get hit by all of em (bosses etc) players only get hit by 1:5 to 1:2 so its less effective and random.

and small monster only get hit by like 1:4

I thought that 1 attack had 2 hits, 1 with the damage displayed on Arreat Summit and 1 for phys damage. I didn't know all the light damage just came from the bolts.

thats why cs is so strong. each bolt does the listed damage. so if you have 1300 cs dmg or so and 7 bolts, you're doing 9100 dmg if all bolts hit.

But what are the chances that all bolts will hit? Would a shorter range make it easier to hit with more bolts (so coming closer before attacking is better)?

you're gonna use a maiden jav no matter what, so no i wouldnt say that would help at all. and also, there's a pretty good chance that at least 4-5 bolts hit, so you're doing ~5k damage.

All javelins are range 3, I'm wondering if it'd be better against range 1 chars like zealots. Should you let them come close instead of backing up to put more range in between you or something, considering only damage you'd be doing of course...

That wasn't explained very well but I don't feel like spelling out what I'm trying to say, hopefully you get it...

i get the feeling there is no major research about how to maximize the #of bolts output based on angle/range etc...

code + a ton of math qualifications would be needed to make such evaluations, probably a few brazillion hours of work to figure it out exactly

sorry i liked that joke allot

anecdotal evidence suggests that being directly north south east or west of your opponent will maximize # bolts hit.

it also depends on the # of bolts it seems. my hld zon had best results from directly below, but that wasnt always true for my lld zon
