1) What is a staffmod?
A staffmod is a mod that has nothing to do with an items affixes. For example, +skills on druid pelts and on sorceress orbs are staffmods.
Code:
The possible staffmods depends on the ilvl of the item:

At ilvl 1-11, you can get 1st-2nd tier.
At ilvl 12-18, you can get 1st-3rd tier.
At ilvl 19-24, you can get 1st-4th tier.
At ilvl 25-36, you can get 2nd-5th tier.
At ilvl 37+, you can get 3rd-6th tier.


A tier is what level it appears on the skill tree. From the top to the bottom, level 1 skills are first tier, level 6 skills are second tier, all the way to level 30 skills, which are sixth tier.***

2) How can we get hand scythes?
Gamble
Shop
Imbue
Find
Horadric Cube recipe*

Gambling
You have to be clvl36 to have a chance at gambling hand scythes, which mean that the hand scythes will be ilvl40 or higher.

Shopping
Only Fara and Elzix (both NM) can sell hand scythes. You have a chance to see hand scythes when you are clvl20, so shopped hand scythes will be ilvl 25 or higher.

Imbuing
You can complete the quest at a minimum of clvl8, so the hand scythes will be ilvl12 or higher.

(magic) Finding
The qlvl of a hand scythe is 41, so they will be ilvl41 or higher.

Horadric Cube Recipe
The Arreat Summit wrote:
1 Perfect Skull + 1 Rare Item + Stone of Jordan = 1 High Quality New Rare Item of the same type
This formula has the possibility of creating a higher quality Rare Item than the following formula. ilvl = int(.66 * clvl) + int(.66 * ilvl) That is, the ilvl will be equal to .66 times your clvl (rounded down) plus .66 times the input item's ilvl (also rounded down).

6 Perfect Skulls + 1 Rare Item = 1 Random Low Quality Rare Item of the same type
You can use this formula to get another chance at a Rare Item of the same type. ilvl = int(.4 * clvl) + int(.4 * ilvl) Player level matters. This formula will not work on items larger than 3x2.

3 Chipped Gems + 1 Magic Weapon = Socketed Magic Weapon

If you use this formula with a weapon that is not normally socketed such as a Javelin, this recipe will create a new magical weapon without any sockets. ilvl=25 magic weapon with 1-2 sockets.

3 Flawless Gems + 1 Magic Weapon = Socketed Magic Weapon
This adds sockets to a magic weapon. The original magic weapon properties will be removed (rerolled) when the new weapon is created. 3) The fun part
Our first skill to look at is Dragon Talon. Referring to part 1, the Hand Scythe needs an ilvl of 24 or lower, which means there are four methods that will work: imbue, the low quality -> normal quality horadric cube recpie, the soj + perfect skull recipe, and the 6 perfect skull horadric cube recipe.

With the low quality -> normal quality cube recipe, you can get as much as +3 dragon talon (along with burst of speed, claw mastery, and tiger strike {and others not useful to us}) with a maximum of 40ias (shael + shael).

For either of the PSkull recipes (don't bother with the soj one unless you're rich), any ilvl hand scythe from 1-41 will yield an alvl of 21, so go nuts on that one. Because the alvl for any of the +1skilltree affixes is 20, you can get a +4 dragon talon scythe. You can get a maximum of 50ias on this scythe (10ias suffix, 2 socket prefix for shaels).

The output ilvl of imbues is clvl +4 so as long as you imbue with a clvl37 or lower, you will have a chance at a +4 scythe.

So for all of you kicker fanatics out there, give it a shot. Grab a low quality hand scythe, an eld rune, a chipped gem, 6 perfect skulls, and a level 8 character with an imbue and get three chances at a +3 talon scythe, and two chances at a +4 talon hand scythe.

Because Dragon Talon is what most people are after, I'll stop there, and only guide you through fade and venom. For any trappers/mbers, you can use this logic towards finding +4/5 lit sentry and mb scythes.

The alvl of the +2skilltree affixes is 40, so the scythe needs a minimum ilvl of 60. Re-read the staffmod information at the top. (this is why you cannot get a +5 talon scythe to spawn).

***Barbarian skills are different
This technique not only works on handscythes, but any other item that can spawn with staffmods.

Okay so basically you can't get the +2 martial arts or 20-30%IAS because it'll bump the Ilvl making it impossible to get +DT as a staff mod?

For the six non-barbarian classes, there are five skills on each level. Barbarians have, starting from level 1, 6/7/4/4/4/5 skills on each level.

Battle Cry, Frenzy, Increased Speed, Battle Orders, Grim Ward

just remember there are restrictions on Barb skills. you are not NORMALLY allowed many combat skills.
as an example getting a +Xww helm is just as tough as +Xholyshield scepters

low quality? meaning use chip gems on?

u cant shop those i think, ull need a clvl well over 25 at which point ud get magicals only anyway

for some reason im certain getting higher qlvl items cracked and low quality, if i remeber right,....was realllly rare.

I meant you can get magic hand scythes in act 2 nm. I figured she'd just wanted to reroll them to try to get diff mods.

no clue. low quality threw me off

but a hand scythe seemed so frustrating to shop for i never even tried, that just threw my patience out the window. atleast scepters and bone wands i tried.


how can u guys stand it? ahem,,, macro support?
